Trip Report: Sydney Caravan & Camping Show

The annual Sydney Caravan and Camping supershow is currently taking place.

Travelander

Open over a whopping 8-day period, this show aims at showcasing the very latest caravans (on road and offroad), camper trailers, tents along with the usual big brands like ARB.

I was curious to explore the various camper trailers on offer plus any internal vehicle modifications that might look useful.

The Travelander, a trayback camper, was impressive with its ability to expand into a neat rooftop tent and kitchen area.  It requires either a single cab or dual cab vehicle.

 Plenty of swags on offer...  they look cool but I don't know anyone who uses them.

ORS Offroad Systems had their Toyota Land Cruiser 100 series on display.  A very practical interior including a water pump in the left door.

I have often seen dedicated gas bottle mounts but here is a simple strap idea.

Bushranger had a show special for their hot water shower system...  I might have to continue with my solar shower water bag for a few more years before indulging in this unit.  Although, having hot water on tap, would be wonderful.

Track Trailer Tvan had a price tag of AU$55,000.  Comfortable accommodation for two only.

ARB 4x4 Accessories had a full stand showcasing the latest vehicle modifications, accessories and equipment.  

I like the Conqueror caravans, known as Urban Escape Vehicles. If I manage to persuade the family to do a 'Lap of Australia', I would like to complete it with this unit.  Perfect for a small family interested in remote locations.

A neat competitor to the Conqueror is the Echo 4x4 Campers.  Imported from South Africa, these units had a very tidy finish with plenty of interior modifications that would keep you planning for months.

I did make a purchase - four new wolf boxes (plastic ammo boxes) similiar to the units I used on my trans-Africa trip.  Tough, stackable and a neat size for the interior of the vehicle or the roofrack.

Overall, for an entry fee of AU$20, the show catered for caravaners, Grey Nomads and the casual camper hunting for bargain price camping gear.  The show did not cater for independent overlanders who were looking for vehicle based equipment and modifications (a small section of the show did cater for equipment). I think the Australian market is ready for an overland workshop!
